My 4 Favorite Books This Month | February 2019

I read 16 books this month, only 1/4 of which I would recommend. Below are the 4 books that I gave 4 or 5 stars.

5 stars: The book was extraordinary. It was either brilliantly written, well researched or life changing.

4 stars: It was a book that I really enjoyed reading and discussing with others and would encourage others to read

FIVE STAR BOOKS

It was not a five star book month. I didn’t read any that I would give a perfect score. BUT…my first book for March hit the mark. I’ll include it next month.

FOUR STAR BOOKS

The Outsider – Stephen King  [F]

He’s the master. I couldn’t imagine giving anything he writes less than four stars. His character development is amazing and no matter how scary his books may be, his characters always, always, always make me laugh.

The Broken Girls – Simone St. James  [F]

I’m not sure why I read two creepy stories in a row, but this was part mystery / part ghost story. For those of us who grew up with that one ghost story that everyone knew about…this will hit home.

Every Note Played – Lisa Genova [F]

This was a difficult read for me because it is such an intimate look at living with ALS. A good friend lost her battle to ALS a couple of years ago and I was reminded of what it was like to watch her body slowly stop functioning. I can’t even imagine what it was like for her. She was so strong through all of it.

A Natural Woman – Carole King  [NF]

A great look inside the crazy world we are living in and how important it is to realize that most of what we think of as “normal” is not very normal at all. She is one of the greatest songwriters ever and this was a wonderful look inside her life and her humility.

“I love doing all those things. They make so much more sense than driving up and down the canyon to bring one kid to this friends house and another kid to that after school activity or shopping for clothes and furniture, or for that matter, buying overpriced groceries wrapped in plastic.”
